Existing Mold vs. Custom Mold: How Outdoor Brands Make the Right Decision

When developi ng a new outdoor product, many buyers spend most of their time comparing materials, finishes, colors, or packaging. Surprisingly, one of the decisions that has the biggest impact on cost, lead time, and future product development happens much earlier.

Should you choose an existing mold, or invest in a custom mold?

There isn’t a single answer for every project. The right decision depends on your product strategy, expected sales volume, brand positioning, and long-term business goals.

At Shichuang, we’ve worked with outdoor brands, pet brands, EDC companies, and promotional product suppliers for more than 20 years. One thing we’ve learned is that the most successful projects don’t always start with a custom mold. They start with choosing the right development path.

Why existing molds are the preferred choice for many new projects

Many buyers assume that using an existing mold means selling the same product as everyone else.

In reality, existing molds are often the most efficient solution during the early stages of product development.

Since the mold, production tooling, and manufacturing process have already been validated, factories can move directly into sampling and production. This significantly reduces development time and eliminates mold investment.

For brands launching a new collection or testing market demand, this approach allows more budget to be invested in branding, packaging, marketing, and customer acquisition rather than tooling.

This is one of the reasons why many outdoor, EDC, and pet brands begin with existing hardware before developing exclusive designs later.

Why is the MOQ for existing molds usually lower?

One question we hear frequently is:

“Why is the minimum order quantity different for existing molds and custom molds?”

The answer has very little to do with pricing.

When a factory already owns the mold, most of the development work has already been completed.

That includes:

  • mold manufacturing
  • tooling validation
  • production optimization
  • quality testing
  • process adjustments

Because these costs have already been recovered over previous production runs, factories can usually support lower MOQs.

For buyers, this means lower investment and lower risk when launching new products.

Why does developing a custom mold require a higher MOQ?

A custom mold is much more than producing a different shape.

Before mass production even begins, the factory must complete a series of engineering processes, including mold design, CNC machining, trial production, structural adjustments, and multiple rounds of testing.

After the mold is approved, it still requires maintenance throughout its production life to ensure consistent dimensions and stable product quality.

These development costs are spread across future production orders rather than a single shipment.

This is why custom mold projects usually require a higher MOQ—not because factories want larger orders, but because the investment needs to be shared across the expected production volume.

When buyers understand this process, the MOQ becomes much easier to evaluate from a business perspective.

Sometimes we recommend not opening a custom mold

One of the biggest misconceptions is that manufacturers always encourage customers to develop new molds.

At Shichuang, we often recommend the opposite.

If a customer is still validating a new market or launching their first product, we usually suggest starting with an existing mold.

Many existing designs can still be customized through:

  • anodized colors
  • laser engraving
  • custom logos
  • branded packaging
  • webbing combinations
  • retail display solutions

This allows brands to test the market with lower investment while still building a recognizable product.

Once sales become stable and long-term demand is confirmed, investing in a custom mold becomes a much more strategic decision.

For many customers, this approach reduces development risk while preserving flexibility for future product upgrades.

Which option fits your business stage?

There is no universal answer.

Different brands often require different development strategies.

Our experience at Shichuang

As an OEM and ODM manufacturer specializing in aluminum carabiners and outdoor hardware, Shichuang has supported brands across the outdoor, pet, EDC, and promotional markets for over two decades.

Rather than recommending the same solution to every customer, we begin by understanding the application, target users, expected sales volume, and long-term product strategy.

Sometimes the best recommendation is an existing mold. Sometimes a custom mold creates greater value.

Our role is to help customers make that decision based on practical manufacturing experience—not simply on price or MOQ.
