Why Outdoor Brands Prefer Anodized Aluminum

Outdoor products require more than just aesthetics. Whether it’s hiking backpacks, camping lights, water bottles, trekking poles, or aluminum carabiners, outdoor products are frequently exposed to harsh environments.

Rain, mud, UV radiation, humidity, scratches, and temperature fluctuations all test the durability of outdoor gear.

Therefore, many outdoor brands, including Patagonia, Arc’teryx, Osprey, YETI, Hydro Flask, Sea to Summit, and Black Diamond, place great emphasis on material selection and surface treatment during product development.

Anodizing aluminum is one of the most widely used surface treatment methods. The benefits of anodizing for aluminum components such as custom aluminum carabiners include: improved corrosion resistance, scratch resistance, long-lasting vibrant color, lightweight design without sacrificing durability. Whether for functionality or brand promotion, anodized aluminum alloy carabiners play a crucial role.

Dongguan Shichuang places great emphasis on the anodizing process in the production of carabiners.

What is anodizing?

Aluminum alloys readily react with oxygen in the air, spontaneously forming a very thin (approximately 0.01µm) and porous native oxide film. Moisture, salt spray, and mud can easily penetrate this film, corroding the substrate.

Anodizing is an electrochemical forced oxidation process that grows a dense, continuous alumina ceramic film in situ on the aluminum surface. This physically isolates the aluminum from corrosive media.

This film is very thin; professional outdoor carabiner buckles have a film thickness controlled at 10-15µm (hard anodized), while ordinary EDC quick-release buckles have a thickness controlled at 8-10µm, simultaneously achieving both lightweight and durable aluminum alloy carabiner buckles.

Furthermore, the sealing process is also crucial.

Because the anodized film itself contains tiny micropores, without treatment, over time, moisture will penetrate these micropores and corrode the underlying aluminum alloy. Shichuang adds a sealing process, which includes two types.

The first type is hot water-based sealing, using 95°C deionized water. The water generated in the micropores and the alumina seal the pores, achieving an anti-corrosion effect. The second type is nickel-cobalt composite salt sealing.

This process is mostly used for outdoor carabiners. The principle is to fill the micropores with metal salt to form a tightly sealed layer. This process allows for over 500 hours of neutral salt spray testing, making it suitable for high-salt-smog environments like the sea. Once completely sealed, salt spray, moisture, and ultraviolet rays will not penetrate the metal substrate, extending the lifespan of the carabiner outdoors.

Colors that can be produced by anodizing:

Whether it’s Hydro Flask’s iconic blue, Patagonia’s commonly used earth tones, or Arc’teryx’s minimalist style, color consistency plays a crucial role in brand identity.

Based on Dongguan Shichuang’s over 20 years of experience producing carabiners, climbing hooks, and various aluminum alloy clips, common anodized colors on the market include:

Black ,Silver,Blue,Red,Green,Orange,Gold,Gray

Shichuang also provides customized Pantone color matching services for many OEM projects.

How to customize?

Shichuang uses the Pantone international color chart provided by clients as a benchmark to create a unique dye file for each button, including dye concentration, oxidation time, and dyeing temperature parameters, which are then archived. This allows for consistent color across batches and orders for the same aluminum alloy hook and loop.

It’s worth noting that the surface treatment of aluminum alloy spring hooks requires careful consideration of certain risks. Electroplating is avoided because electroplated coatings have poor adhesion, are prone to peeling after impacts or mud, and are susceptible to rusting when used outdoors, significantly reducing the button’s lifespan.
