If you are interested, here is the story about the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival, one of China’s four major traditional festivals.

During the Warring States period in China, the states of Chu and Qin were vying for dominance. Qu Yuan, a poet, was highly valued by the King of Chu. However, his political views were opposed by the conservative faction led by court official Jin Shang. They continuously slandered Qu Yuan before the king, which gradually caused the King of Chu to distance himself from Qu Yuan.

Qu Yuan, who held great ambitions, was deeply pained. In his sorrow and anger, he wrote immortal poems such as Li Sao and Tian Wen. In 229 BC, the Qin army captured eight cities of Chu and later sent an envoy to invite the King of Chu to Qin for peace talks.

Seeing through the Qin king’s conspiracy, Qu Yuan risked his life to enter the palace and explain the danger. Not only did the King of Chu ignore him, but he also banished Qu Yuan from the capital, Ying. The King of Chu went to Qin as scheduled and was imprisoned upon arrival. He was filled with regret, fell ill from depression, and died in Qin three years later.

Not long after King Qingxiang of Chu ascended the throne, the Qin army launched another attack on Chu. King Qingxiang fled the capital in panic, and the Qin troops took over Ying. During his exile, Qu Yuan heard the devastating news that the former king had died in a foreign land and that the capital had fallen. He was overwhelmed with despair, let out a final cry to the heavens, and threw himself into the turbulent Miluo River.

When the fishermen on the river and the people on the shore heard that Minister Qu Yuan had drowned himself, they rushed out in boats to search for his body — a custom that later evolved into dragon boat racing. People threw zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) and eggs into the river, hoping the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan’s body. Some physicians even poured realgar wine into the river to intoxicate the dragons and water beasts, so that Qu Yuan’s body would not be harmed.

Thus, every year on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month — the day Qu Yuan drowned himself — the people of Chu would row dragon boats, throw zongzi into the river, and drink realgar wine to honor the poet. These customs have been passed down for generations and continue to this day as the traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival.
